With Christmas and end-of-year parties starting to fill the work calendar, we are officially entering the silly season. And, as we all know, it’s not called ‘silly’ for nothing. As people start to relax in the lead up to holidays or festivities, there is a risk some employees may let their hair down a little too much.
Many employers can struggle to find the balance with reminding employees of the organisation’s expectations and not putting a damper on the spirit of things. So, how can you manage your organisation’s risk without looking like Uncle Scrooge?
Here are our three tips for easing into the Silly Season…
The first step is to ensure your organisation has the appropriate policies and procedures in place. These policies should cover what is considered acceptable workplace behaviour, including a drug and alcohol policy, and policies around sexual harassment, discrimination and bullying.
We all know this time of year is pretty hectic. Most employees simply don’t have time (or the interest) to read through lengthy policy documents. But it’s important that organisations ensure their people are aligned and understanding of expectations leading into this time of year. Refresher training on any relevant code of conduct or other policy like work health and safety, social media, drugs and alcohol, anti-discrimination, anti-sexual harassment or anti-bullying is never a bad idea.

The festive season is upon us, and I’m sure you’re all getting excited about the end of year function! This is a time for us to celebrate the festive season and to reflect on the year we’ve had together.
While we want everyone to have a fantastic time, please remember that this is still a work function. Take a few moments to tune up on some of our organisational policies (attached). These policies are in place to ensure we all have a great night with everyone behaving safely and responsibly.
All of these policies apply at the function, and any breach could lead to disciplinary action (up to and including termination of employment). We don’t want anyone to end up on Santa’s naughty list, so please continue to act respectfully and responsibly.
Please remember that the use of illegal drugs and/or excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited at all times during the Christmas Party. Food and drinks will be provided at the Christmas party, including alcoholic beverages. If you are drinking alcohol, please ensure you drink responsibly and ensure you have arranged a way to travel home safely.
